Insomnia

It's three o'clock in the morning, and you can't sleep. You stare at the clock, aware that your baby will wake in a few hours, but you can't sleep. You know you have a busy day ahead and need to be well-rested, but you can't sleep. No matter how hard you try, you can't sleep.

Nothing is more frustrating than not being able to sleep - tossing and turning. Your mind is racing, night noises keep you awake.

You're acutely aware of the need to get a full night's rest in order to have the energy to enjoy your new arrival but you're worried that your sleeplessness will rob you of precious moments with your baby or is a symptom of postpartum depression or some other health condition... and your sleeplessness only worsens.

What is insomnia?

Insomnia is the inability to obtain an adequate amount or quality of sleep. The difficulty can be in falling asleep, remaining asleep, or both. People with insomnia do not feel refreshed when they wake up. Insomnia is a common symptom during pregnancy and, after giving birth.

For most women, many sleepness nights pass during the last month of their pregnancy. There are many factors - the inability to get comfortable, waking to urinate frequently, excitement about your new baby - all conspiring to keep you from dreamland. Most women understand that insomnia after giving birth is perfectly normal and believe they will return to restful sleep soon.

If you feel that you do not get enough sleep or satisfying sleep, you may have insomnia

People with insomnia have one or more of the following:

  • difficulty falling asleep
  • waking up often during the night and having trouble going back to sleep
  • waking up too early in the morning
  • unrefreshing sleep

What are the different types of insomnia and what causes them?

A person can have primary or secondary insomnia. Primary insomnia occurs on its own - you're having sleep problems that are not directly associated with any other health condition or problem. Secondary insomnia indicates that you are having sleep problems because of something else, such as a health condition, perhaps postpartum depression.
